Portland police chief credits violence prevention initiative for steep drop in shootings

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Despite a deadly shooting Tuesday, police data shows the number of deadly incidents in Portland is down dramatically compared to this time last year and compared to the three-year, year-to-date average.

City leaders credit Ceasefire – a roughly $9 million-per-year program that connects police, prosecutors, community groups, and the city’s violence reduction outreach teams – for the decrease.
