Construction starts Monday to bring back Portland’s iconic elk statue

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Construction on the Thompson Elk Fountain to return the iconic elk statue to Southwest Main Street in downtown Portland is set to begin Monday.

The fountain and statue are Portland’s second-oldest piece of public art, making its debut in 1900.

But more than a hundred years later, the city removed the statue after it was vandalized during a summer of social justice protests in 2020…
