I would like to address the transportation funding issues affecting state and local budgets, (“Portland says basic street maintenance ‘at risk’ after sweeping state transportation package implodes,” July 1).
I am disappointed that the only option seems to be increasing the gas tax and the cost of vehicle registrations and titles. In Northeast Portland, there are several roads where the speed limits are not obeyed, with speeds up to 20 miles per hour over the limit. Ticketing these speeding drivers and installing equipment to detect speed and traffic light violators would add funds to the budget. Also, citing automobiles with expired vehicle registrations should be a high priority, as I have seen many that have 2022 expiration dates.
Many of these options would be cost effective and not be an additional cost to the general law-abiding public…
