Complaints about illegal fireworks in Portland pour in, but city ban might be working

More than 4,300 complaints about illegal fireworks have flooded Portland Fire & Rescue’s new, non-emergency online reporting tool since it launched on July 1, the city said.

The sale and use of fireworks were banned in Portland in 2022, after they caused two catastrophic fires.

The online complaint form was created not for enforcement in the moment but in the future, said Rick Graves, the fire bureau’s spokesperson. The city will analyze the data to help it identify places where people are most likely to set off fireworks…
