Former Portland journalist committed ‘targeted acts of violence,’ prosecutor claims as trial starts

Prosecutors revealed in court Tuesday the camera footage, physical evidence and internet searches they claim will show that a former reporter committed a spree of hate crimes targeting houses of worship and a minority-owned business in Portland in 2022.

A Multnomah County jury is expected to begin deliberating 11 charges against Mike Bivins later this week. The charges include first-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree bias crime, the legal term for a hate crime.

“At its core, this case is about targeted acts of violence and intimidation against other members of our community, because of their race and their religion,” prosecutor Charlie Weiss said during the trial’s opening statements…
