Portland’s DEI policies could cost the city hundreds of millions in federal grants

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The City of Portland could lose out on nearly $400 million in federal grant money because of a conflict between federal rules and the city’s equity policies, according to City Administrator Michael Jordan.

The problem is that some federal grants now require cities to follow specific rules that Portland says might go against its long-standing programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Because of this, Portland has already decided not to sign one federal grant agreement to avoid breaking its own policies.

If the same rules apply to other grants, city leaders warn that Portland could be blocked from accepting millions of dollars in funding. That includes money for transportation, housing, gun violence prevention, and other key services…
