Portland arson suspect allegedly yells racial slurs before 4-alarm fire, pleads not guilty

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A fire that ravaged a 19-unit apartment complex on East Burnside Street has been linked to suspicious origins, according to fire investigators.

The fire broke out in the Hazelwood neighborhood on Friday and prompted a four-alarm response from Portland Fire & Rescue.

An elderly woman survived a escape from the massive apartment fire by jumping from a balcony, according to a neighbor.

Michael Jones, a neighbor, said, “An 82-year-old lady who jumped off that balcony over there to try to make it out…It’s an insane story.”…
