Wannabe ‘cartel assassin,’ 19, gets life for birthday party murder

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A teenager who claimed he could become a cartel assassin was sentenced to prison for a 2023 shooting that took the life of another teen at a Hillsboro birthday party.

Derek Cuellar-Torres was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 32.5 years, following his guilty plea to second-degree murder with a firearm and first-degree attempted murder with a firearm, the Washington County District Attorney’s Office said Monday.

The case dates to October 21, 2023, when the victims in this case, who were 16 and 17, attended a birthday party in Hillsboro.
