Officials call for enhanced security measures at downtown Portland’s Central Library

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Both Portland and Multnomah County officials are calling for increased security measures in and around the Central Library in Downtown Portland.

These calls come in the weeks following a fatal shooting in the streets near the library. After the incident, the Portland Police Bureau’s Central Precinct issued some security recommendations to boost safety in and around the area. Those included more secure measures like metal detectors and monitored access points at all public entrances.

They also suggested changes to the outside of the library, such as reducing the WiFi strength so it does not reach as well outside, plus adding signs to discourage sitting on rails.

Multnomah County operates the library, but this week County Commissioner Meghan Moyer sent a letter to Police Chief Bob Day asking for more of a presence in the area. She said they are working with library staff to maintain a safe environment, but they cannot do it alone…
