Reducing Prison Population in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore.– Multnomah County leaders have voted in favor of a plan to keep more convicted criminals out of prison.

Keeping people in prison in Oregon is expensive, costing more than $1.4 billion every 2 years. So the state passed the Justice Reinvestment Grant Program, encouraging local communities to limit prison use, and reinvest some of the avoided costs into local public safety. Monday, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez was among those supporting a plan to pitch in $6.4 million dollars to get some felons out of prison with intense parole supervision.
