‘Violent protestor’ charged for allegedly injuring federal officer, damaging Portland ICE building

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A Portland man made his first federal court appearance on Monday, facing charges for allegedly assaulting a federal officer and damaging federal property during a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced 24-year-old Robert Hoopes was charged with aggravated assault of a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and depredation of federal property exceeding $1,000.

According to court documents and information shared in court, the charges stem from what authorities called a “violent protest” on June 14 at the South Portland ICE building.

The day of the protest, Border Protection tactical officers and ICE Enforcement and Removal Officers were stationed inside the Macadam Ave. ICE facility to secure the building from “violent protestors outside,” according to an affidavit for the case. “While federal law enforcement officers were within the building, numerous individuals attempted to breach the front door of the facility.”…
