New veterans recovery shelter to open at former Kenton Hotel in North Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) — The former Kenton Hotel in North Portland is being transformed into a 24/7 shelter for unhoused veterans recovering from substance use.

The site, located on North Interstate Avenue, will offer 17 beds to veterans. The original rooms in the hotel building currently remain intact, each featuring a unique mural on the wall.

The shelter will be named the Thayer Family Foundation Veterans Shelter, in honor of the veterans-focused charity that contributed a major donation toward the purchase. Additional funding comes from a $500,000 grant through the Metro Supportive Housing Services Measure.

Multnomah County and Do Good Multnomah teamed up to make the project possible, with a goal of addressing what they call a growing need for transitional housing and recovery services customized for veterans…
