VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — Betsy Ross is perhaps the best-known flagmaker in US history. But one of the 138 people who submitted designs for a new Vancouver city flag may soon have something in common with that Founding Seamstress.
The City of Vancouver said its current flag from 1993 “is dated, not easily recognizable, and doesn’t follow basic flag design principles.” So between March and June 14 — Flag Day — they began accepting flag designs from the public. On Sunday, all 138 flag designs were on display at Vancouver City Hall.
Each flag entry had to follow basic guidelines and rules. And each flag will be judged by the Flag Design Review Committee, made up of Vancouver residents and two members of City Council. The committee will recommend a design that the City Council must approve and adopt. But the committee also reserves the right not to recommend one if they feel “a suitable design is not submitted.”
