Readers respond: New shelters shouldn’t be in Portland

To put the shelters proposed in Southwest Portland and the Pearl District in context, we need to revisit recent headlines in various Portland publications, such as “Intel’s … Oregon future in doubt,” and “Multnomah County lags Oregon in job growth,” (“City confirms newest overnight-only shelter to open soon in SW Portland,” July 24).

It’s important to understand that the Metro supportive housing services tax was designed to implement a coordinated and comprehensive response to the homeless concerns that are negatively impacting every community in the Metro region.

We need to ensure that all three counties provide shelters equitably, and that Clackamas and Washington cannot keep sending their homeless to Multnomah County – which I feel is evidenced by the recent numbers reported for each county…
