Aloha High School changes logo after ‘appropriateness’ of previous mascot was questioned

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Aloha High School will usher in the school year with new branding, after several community members raised concerns for the “appropriateness” of its mascot and logo.

Although attendees of the school within the Beaverton School District will still be referred to as the “warriors,” its logo and mascot will now depict a wolf. The branding formerly featured a graphic of Kamehameha.

Oregon has prohibited public schools from using Native American mascots and team names, unless they reached an agreement with federally-recognized tribes across the state, since July 2017.

While AHS’ mascot depicts the first king of Hawaii instead of a Native American figure, and “warriors” is permitted as a team name as long as it isn’t combined by imagery associated with American Indian Tribes, the school revealed in spring 2024 that several people had raised an issue with its branding…
