After long history of crashes, PBOT makes traffic changes to notorious Northeast Portland curve

PORTLAND, Ore. — Where Northeast Weidler Street meets 24th Avenue, the near-90-degree curve seems to catch some drivers by surprise. Multiple times over the years, drivers have missed the curve completely and barreled into an apartment building on the east side of 24th instead.

Some neighbors call the building simply “The Car Crash House.”

The latest crash happened on Christmas Eve, when a driver plowed into the front porch, broke a gas line and started a massive fire. Neighbors recalled seeing the flames licking 20 feet in the air. One of the then-tenants told KGW that she lost all of her possessions and her cat, Lucille, to the blaze…
