Human remains found in car of Martin family missing for nearly 70 years, diver says

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A diver who helped find a car submerged in the Columbia River and likely belonging to a family who disappeared nearly 70 years ago, said Friday that he has found the remains of several people that have been pulled from the car.

On Dec. 7, 1958, Kenneth and Barbara Martin drove their three daughters, ages 11, 13, and 14, to go look for Christmas wreath greenery in the Columbia River Gorge. They never returned home.

There have been many theories as to what happened to the family, but without the car it’s been hard to close the case.

In November 2024, Archer Mayo, a diver, discovered the old station wagon in a part of the river known as “the pit.” He reported his discovery to authorities so they could make a plan to get it out…
