Portland police look to prevent street takeover this weekend

The Portland Police Bureau said it is aware of recent social media posts calling for people to attend a street takeover in inner Southeast Portland this weekend, and police are on a mission to discourage the takeover.

“Due to significant public safety concerns this activity raises,” the bureau wrote in a press release, “Portland Police officers will be dedicated to prevention and intervention.”

A street takeover is when drivers race each other and perform donuts and other stunts on public roads and highways. They have drawn crowds in Portland within the last year ranging from 100 people to upward of 1,000. The Police Bureau documented 139 street-takeover events in the city last year…
