Readers respond: City must act as Fred Meyer closes

My partner and I own a home in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Like thousands of families in the area, we rely on the Fred Meyer store for our weekly groceries. We are all heartbroken to learn the Gateway Fred Meyer will close in September after 70 years of operation, (“NE Portland Fred Meyer to close,” July 16).

The Gateway Shopping Center anchored by this Fred Meyer has been in decline for years. We have seen little effort to fix it, except for TriMet’s recent improvementsat the Gateway Transit Center.

Now is the time for our new mayor and city council to act. With the high cost of living in Portland, I read that New York City is considering a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices down for the community. Let’s pilot something like this right here at Gateway…
