Slingshot attack near TriMet MAX stop ends in 5+ year sentence for perpetrator

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — More than a year after a slingshot-wielding man hospitalized someone in an attack near a TriMet MAX stop, he has been sentenced to prison.

Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Souede sentenced Joseph Naes to 70 months with the Oregon Department of Corrections on Monday. He will serve another three years of post-prison supervision.

Court documents show that a deputy with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a stabbing near a MAX stop on East Burnside on July 17, 2024. The affidavit states that law enforcement viewed surveillance footage of an individual, who was later identified as Naes, watching a man walk past before using a slingshot to shoot a metal arrow into his back.

The suspect left the scene and the victim already had been transported to the hospital by the time a deputy arrived, according to officials. Records show that the injured man told authorities he had interacted with Naes a week prior, in an effort to stop him from harassing the woman he was also with the day of the attack.
