Portland, OR – A tragic case of domestic violence unfolded in Portland when a 4-year-old girl called 911, reporting that her father had killed her mother. Neilyann Ysam, 24, was found stabbed to death on July 19, leaving her five children, all under the age of six, traumatized but unharmed.
Domestic Violence History Between Mother and Father
According to court documents, Ysam had previously fled from her alleged abuser, 28-year-old S Mate Joseph, after years of domestic violence. The couple’s history of abuse dates back to 2019, when Joseph pleaded guilty to assaulting Ysam while she was pregnant.
Reports from that incident in Vancouver, Washington, described Ysam as “barefoot, screaming, crying, and attempting to get away” from Joseph. Two men had waited outside for police when confronted by Joseph’s 16-year-old brother, who allegedly threatened them with a knife. The teenager was ultimately shot and killed by officers, while Joseph was taken down with a stun gun and arrested. He later served 11 days in jail after pleading guilty to assault in the fourth degree, harassment, and jumping bail.
The Fatal Incident in Portland
Six years later, Ysam had relocated to Portland to escape Joseph and was living with an aunt when the fatal attack occurred. On July 19, Joseph allegedly stabbed Ysam in the home while nearly half a dozen children were present.
The 4-year-old daughter’s 911 call provided authorities with critical information. She reportedly told dispatchers, “My dad killed my mom.” Following that, Joseph himself reportedly called 911, stating he had stabbed a “loved one” but was unsure if she was still alive. He then fled the scene, leaving Ysam bleeding to death while the children remained inside.
Arrest and Charges
