PORTLAND, Ore. — The day before Portland’s latest overnight homeless shelter was set to welcome its first guests, someone spray-painted the building in apparent protest of its presence in the Pearl District.
On Monday morning, the site at Northwest Northrup Street and 15th Avenue was decorated with a few slogans in yellow paint, some of them apparently calling out Mayor Keith Wilson and Vanessa Sturgeon, president and CEO of TMT Development, whose company is involved in the building’s ownership.
“Mayor + Vanessa = ruined lives,” one such message read. Other messages painted on the building Monday included “No shelter” and “Shame on you Mayor.”…
