Portland honors legacy of Black-owned media with historic story boulder display at Dawson Park

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Parks & Recreation unveiled a new story boulder at Dawson Park this week, expanding the installation to honor Black-owned newspapers that have served the city’s community for decades.

The 13th boulder joins 12 existing installations that commemorate Portland’s Black history, including the 1963 Medgar Evers Memorial Freedom March and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1961 visit to the city.
