PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After not returning to Chapman Elementary School for the past year, the Vaux’s Swifts appear to have found a new chimney to call home, and it’s at a different Portland elementary school.
According to the Bird Alliance of Oregon, on Sunday night, their volunteers counted over 7,000 swifts funneling into the chimney at Abernethy Elementary School.
Although they originally weren’t sharing the new roosting locations to avoid overcrowding neighborhoods, the Bird Alliance said they spoke with Abernethy’s principal, who gave them permission to share the new location.
