North Portland homeless shelter has neighbors thinking about moving away: ‘People should not be living like this’

PORTLAND, Ore. — Neighbors living around a homeless shelter in North Portland told KGW that they are ready to sell their homes and leave due to the drug use, vandalism and other livability issues that have come with it.

In January, the city of Portland directed The Salvation Army to reopen the “Moore Street Shelter,” as it’s called, off North Killingsworth Street and North Williams. That added 100 beds toward Mayor Keith Wilson’s goal of opening 1,500 by Dec. 1.

“It’s been absolutely miserable living here,” said Carrie Henderson, who lives across the street from the shelter entrance. “Once the shelter opened, everything completely changed.”…
