Readers respond: Lower flags for loss of freedom

Yes, we should lower our flags, but not to honor a single activist. They should be lowered to acknowledge the loss of freedoms in this country ever since the current administration was put in power.

Our flags fly proudly in celebration of the rights we enjoy in America: the right to speak out (as Charlie Kirk was said to do eloquently), the right to disagree, the right to gather and protest peacefully, the right to fair and open elections, the right to be treated fairly and humanely under our laws and the right to disagree with the political party currently in office. But these rights are being eroded and will be forfeited entirely if we remain mute about the blatant biases and illegal actions taking place in our federal government.

When we seek to honor one individual over another simply because of their attachment to the political party in power – while ignoring the same type of attacks against members of an opposing political group – we demonstrate a level of belief in that person’s and that party’s ideology. This self-promotion is a hallmark of the type of governance we are now experiencing, and it should shame every one of us. The constant disparagement of opposing views should concern us…
