At 5:57 a.m. on Friday, September 12, a “shooting” report sent Central Precinct officers to an apartment building on the 5100 block of S.E. 17th Avenue, just south of the Mobil gas station. As confusing as it was for the neighbors, the situation was also puzzling to the arriving officers.
Witnesses told THE BEE they saw patrol cars closing 17th Avenue, just south of McLoughlin Boulevard opposite the apartments. A female officer surrounded by officers was using the PA system in a police cruiser, loud-hailing statements like “you’re not in trouble; we just want to make sure you’re all right”, and “come out with your hands up”.
Some officers were preparing breaching tools, as if they were considering forcefully entering one of the apartments. No ambulances were at the scene…
