Nearby residents fed up with ICE agents’ ‘violent tactics’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Lashawnda Shavers and Mercedes Moreno live at the Gray’s Landing apartmentsnot far from the ICE facility in South Portland. They’re fed up with what the federal agents are doing to protesters, actions that directly impact them inside their homes.

“The violent tactics that federal agents are using, including tear gas and pepper balls, are really impacting residents’ quality of life,” Moreno told KOIN 6 News.

Shavers agreed. “It’s full of tear gas. People are, like, coughing, choking, eyes. I mean, it was scary.”

The Gray’s Landing apartment complex is managed by Reach, a non-profit that provides housing to low-income residents. Over this past weekend, residents endured tear gas spilling into their homes as federal agents repeatedly deployed it and pepper balls on protesters and the media.

“It’s just not OK for human beings. And we all deserve to live and deserve to be here. We experience it daily. And it’s rough, it’s rough,” Moreno said…
