Midyear layoff notices go out at Portland-area school district, as negotiations over cutting school days continue

Sixty-two employees at the Reynolds School District were put on notice this week that their jobs could end or shift in a month’s time, if the district and its employees cannot agree before then on an alternative plan to solve a $5.5 million budget shortfall.

The school district and unions representing teachers and support staff have been going back and forth for months, trying to find a way around yet more layoffs, after the district shed 117 positions last spring. That wasn’t enough to close the district’s…..
