Horseback rider joins Portland ICE facility protesters

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland protesters continue to come up with unique ways to demonstrate outside the ICE facility.

First it was inflatable costumes, then dance parties and roller skaters. Around mid-afternoon Sunday, Mateo Garcia showed up on his horse, Canello, to register displeasure with the Trump Administration and its immigration policies.

Garcia told KOIN 6 News he has been to the ICE facility to protest in the past. But he wanted to make a bigger statement, so he packed up 5-year-old Canello in his trailer and brought him from Ridgefield, Wash.

“My parents are immigrants, dad’s Mexican, mom’s Russian,” Garcia said. “I just come down here to support my people and do something different they ain’t seen. This is peaceful. You know, I come down here on the horse and show people and show my people that I support them 100%.”

Garcia was born in Washington. His parents are now US citizens…
