SNAP suspension hits hard: Families fear crowded pantries as support vanishes

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Putting food on the table could become more difficult for hundreds of thousands of Oregonians, as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be put on pause in less than a week.

The Oregon Department of Health and Human Services (ODHS) started notifying families earlier this week that they will not receive new SNAP benefits after Oct. 31.

Out of the approximately 757,000 Oregonians who receive SNAP benefits, 54% are in families with children, 37% are in families with members who are older adults or are disabled, and more than 41% percent are in working families…
