Portland area food banks see surge in visitors amid SNAP cuts, government shutdown

OREGON, USA — As the federal government shutdown enters its second month, food banks in the Portland metro area are seeing a surge in demand.

At Urban Gleaners’ Stephens Creek location, volunteers served twice the number of people they typically see. Volunteer Anthony Johnson told KGW that 50 people were already lined up when the doors opened at 11 a.m., and he expects the numbers to rise.

“I don’t see how we can sustain the amount of people that keep coming in,” Johnson said. “Once people start feeling the strain of not being able to have anything to eat, they are gonna be coming.”…
