Arrest Made In Fire At Portland City Councilor’s Home, ‘Not A Targeted Act Of Violence’, Police Say

A man arrested Tuesday for allegedly sparking a recent fire at the home of Portland, Ore., City Councilor Candace Avalos told police he had only started a small fire to keep warm.

The Portland Police Bureau on Tuesday announced officers located and arrested a man allegedly seen leaving the scene of the fire at Avalos’ residence in the Mill Park neighborhood at around 2:40 a.m. on Oct. 26, and determined the blaze was “not a targeted act of violence.”

When Portland Fire and Rescue responded to the fire, they found multiple parked vehicles and a carport engulfed in flames. No one was injured. The fire was deemed suspicious, and investigators later determined it began in a storage shed adjacent to the residence, though “no evidence of an accelerant or incendiary device was found.”…
