PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The City of Vancouver has selected a new flag for the first time in more than 30 years.
After a months-long search, the Vancouver City Council unanimously approved the design presented by its Flag Selection Committee on Monday. The winning pick features four hallmarks: a “field of green” that represents the city’s natural environment and commitment to sustainability, an emblem inspired by landmarks like the Salmon Run Bell Tower and Grant Street Pier, a white chevron representing the “V” in Vancouver and the connection between land and water, and a “field of blue” that depicts the city’s connection to the Columbia River.

The search dates back to March, when officials first revealed they were seeking a new flag at the annual State of the City event. Officials then formed the selection committee, which narrowed down its options after receiving 138 design proposals and 1,438 feedback responses from the public.
The committee opted for the flag that fused two different designs created by community members Brooke Nugent and Nathan Hunter.
“We believe this flag tells us a story of a community shaped by the Columbia River, a deep sense of place and generations of people who have called this place home,” Committee Chair Rose Mendoza told councilors…
