PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – As TriMet faces a budget shortfall, service cuts for select bus lines went into effect in the Portland metro area Sunday morning.
These cuts come after the agency laid off 26 employees earlier this month as part of a larger plan to cut 68 positions. TriMet said the cuts were “a last resort” intended to help reduce spending by $17.7 million.
Flight cancellations and delays hit PDX, other major airports nationwide
“Service cuts are always our last resort, but by reducing spending now, we avoid more severe cuts down the road, which would affect many more riders,” TriMet said. “We know you depend on us. Unfortunately, without additional state funding and other revenue, service cuts are necessary to balance our budget and keep TriMet financially sound.”
To further balance the budget, further service cuts are expected again in March 2026. But TriMet warned that even more cuts are to be expected in the future.
