Portland’s gas-powered leaf blower ban goes into effect Jan. 1

PORTLAND, Ore. — A ban on gas-powered leaf blowers in Portland is set to go into effect in the new year. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, gas-powered leaf blowers will be banned on public and private property throughout the city.

For the next two years, crews can still use them in October, November and December to deal with heavy, wet leaf piles. But starting in 2028, the ban will apply year-round. The city favored the phased-in approach to allow electric leaf blower technology to improve. At the time of the ordinance’s passage, electric leaf blowers weren’t powerful enough to keep up with fall and early winter leaves.

Violators will receive a warning at first, but subsequent fines could range from $250-$500, with a $1,000 fine for repeat offenders…
