Afghan refugee realizes dream with new restaurant on Powell Blvd

A little over three years ago, THE BEE reported on a special Afghan feast at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church, prepared by Ahmad Jawed. At that time, members of the church hosted the benefit dinner for Jawed and his family who fled Afghanistan as refugees in 2021.

Jawed’s culinary experience as a Chef for the U.S. and allied military forces during the Afghanistan War landed him a job in Portland in 2022 at the downtown Portland restaurant of DarSalam. To the delight of customers, Jawed cooked at DarSalam for a year, becoming well-known for his exemplary culinary skills.

Then, earlier this year, Jawed’s dream of owning his own restaurant became a reality, when he found a space on Powell Boulevard and was able to make the purchase…
