Residents, business owners in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood push for removal of homeless day center

PORTLAND, Ore. — In a North Portland neighborhood, the backlash to a new day center for homeless people has been gathering steam, as some small business owners say they’ve been fighting for their lives ever since it opened up — and they didn’t have it easy before.

Right now, Steve Cook sees each day as a battle to stay in business.

“In a year and a half, I’ve replaced nine windows and three locks,” Cook said. “You just always feel on edge because of the unpredictability of it all.”…
