Jail release scammers use ‘fear’ to target families, MultCo Sheriff’s Office warns

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Law enforcement officials are warning the public in the Portland area to watch out for jail-release scams that prey on the family members and friends of people who are in custody.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are falsely claiming they can secure someone’s release from jail through online payments, money transfers, wire transfers or gift cards.

However, officials say there is no legal method by which a person can secure someone’s release from jail by sending money to a private or third party.
