Portland man unrepentant for killing cousin’s boyfriend during fight at her apartment

Raymond Grant maintained he was the “protector of my family” Friday as he was sentenced to life in prison for killing his cousin’s boyfriend while responding to an early-morning fight between the two.

The shooting left 28-year-old Ace Lewis dead in the stairwell of the Portland apartment he shared with Grant’s cousin about 2 a.m. July 5, 2023. Grant claimed self defense during an October trial, but a jury disagreed and found him guilty of second-degree murder. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Katharine von Ter Stegge ruled Grant, 41, eligible for a chance at parole in 25 years.

The cousin had called Grant that night, saying Lewis had turned violent and asking for a place where she and her two kids could find shelter…
