‘Heartbroken and uncertain’: Portland shooting of Bhutanese refugee leaves family in mourning

When he wasn’t on the clock as a convenience store clerk, Santi Ram Rai, 33, sang, raised his two young children and volunteered as a youth coordinator for an organization that helped the children of fellow refugees from Bhutan, a family friend said.

He also had dreams of opening his own store with his brother, after years of working as an employee at corner markets in Portland.

But all of that was cut short on Dec. 9, when Rai was shot and killed while he worked at the 3D Market in Southeast Portland, according to Portland police. Family friend Rekha Koirala said police told Rai’s family that he was killed by someone attempting to rob the store that evening…
