In Beaverton schools, tracking absenteeism — and the impacts of the immigration crackdown — in real time

Standing in the pouring rain this month amid other high schoolers who walked out of class to protest increased immigration arrests, Beaverton 10th grader Sasha Alvarez said it’s become uncomfortably common for her classmates to be at school one day and gone the next.

“We all know kids who are close to graduating, but they just drop out or don’t even come [to school] anymore,” the Southridge High School student said.
