Readers respond: Build community amid chaos and cruelty

For the first time in 20-plus years of living in my house, I invited neighbors for a get together so we could know each other better, exchange numbers and be more familiar with who’s living nearby.

I view this as a good civic opportunity no matter what. But now – given what feels like an unstoppable torrent of cruelty and vengeance emanating from this administration – I feel more compelled than ever to be an active part of my community, be it the neighborhood, the city or any other group with which I am involved.

I’ve also met my district representatives, and I even went to a budget meeting. This was in addition to participating in national rallies, marches and phone banks.I would have done none of these things had it not been for the inhumane treatment of members of my greater community. In a way, I have the authoritarian pretender to thank for my newfound civic actions…
