Portland native wins 3rd in downhill skiing World Cup, increasing Olympics chances

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland native Jacqueline Wiles increased her chances for making the U.S. Olympic team Sunday, securing third place in World Cup downhill skiing at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in Austria.

Born in Portland and a graduate of Canby High School, Wiles, 33, is a two-time Olympian who competed in the 2014 Sochi Games and the 2022 Beijing Games.

Wiles first made her World Cup debut in late 2013, secured her spot on the national team and Olympic team in 2014, then became a veteran “speed specialist” by 2022.

While she secured a spot in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang as part of Team USA, Wiles suffered a season-ending leg injury from a fall during a World Cup race in Germany, making her unable to compete.

But she made her comeback in the 2023-2024 season, qualifying for the World Cup finals. The following season, Wiles would qualify for the 2025 World Championships team…
