Architectural discovery pushes back opening date for Portland James Beard Market

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The opening date for the James Beard Public Market in downtown Portland has been pushed back six months after a discovery during construction.

The market is a planned indoor and outdoor food hall named in honor of the Portland-born chef James Beard. It will replace a Rite Aid store in a historic building at Southwest Sixth and Alder.

Officials with the market said they’re moving the opening date from fall 2026 to 2027, after an unexpected internal structure was found during demolition.
