Acclaimed Portland restaurant Kann will host residency from esteemed Georgia pitmaster

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Later this month, a Southern barbecue connoisseur will start serving smoked meats and soul food eats at one of Portland’s most revered restaurants.

The basement of the James-Beard-Award-winning Haitian restaurant Kann will begin offering “Pitmaster Bryan Furman BBQ” on Friday, Jan. 30. The culinary residency comes from the namesake chef who Bon Appetit named Georgia’s New King of Barbecue in 2018, and became the first pitmaster to be selected as one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs in 2019.

Portland’s Tacos, Tequila and Tamales Festival, PokéCon among weekend events

Kann founder and chef Gregory Gourdet revealed he and Furman first met while cooking at Food & Wine’s Family Reunion for people of color showing excellence in the dining and hospitality industry.

“I’m such a fan of BBQ personally and knew that Bryan would be the perfect person to bring a new dining experience to Portland this winter below Kann,” Gourdet said in a statement.

According to a release, Furman grew up on a pig farm in South Carolina — but his interest in barbecue began in 2010 at his daughter’s birthday party. He launched B’s Cracklin’ BBQ later in 2014, and now runs the farm-to-pit eatery in several locations throughout Georgia.
