Will gold mining return to Oregon? What this Portland historian learned from the past

Before Oregon was known for timber, it was known for gold.

That’s the underlying message of the new book “Oregon Gold: A History of Mining from the Civil War into the Progressive Era.” Its author, Portland historian William F. Willingham, hopes it will raise awareness of an important aspect of Oregon history that’s largely been forgotten.
