PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Birds and Bees nursery in Southeast Portland is closing soon after 14 years in business.
Caitlin Gaul, the nursery’s co-owner, told KOIN 6 News the closure came after a downturn in the economy, where they just haven’t been able to afford to stay open.
“The last two years, just the, I don’t know, the downturn of the economy. We found ourselves in a position where we just don’t feel like we have any other option,” Gaul said. “Like spring of last year, we were down by more than 50%. May is usually our month where we pay for everything for the year. And last year we found ourselves having to take on more debt to pay the debt or to pay off the, the, debt that we already had. And then December, which is our second, generally our second busiest month. Same thing. It was debt. We were down not quite as much, but almost.”
