More than 30 years after a Hillsboro woman was found strangled in her home, investigators say the long-unsolved case has been closed — and linked to a serial killer who died in prison more than a decade ago.
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday, Feb. 10, that its Cold Case Unit, working with the Hillsboro Police Department, has forensically connected Cesar Barone to the 1992 murder of 83-year-old Elizabeth Burtis Wasson.
According to a 1992 report from the Hillsboro Argus, Wasson had returned to her home in the 2100 block of Southeast Brookwood Avenue after a trip to the grocery store the night of Sept. 23 Her daughter left the house around 7 p.m. and, after several unsuccessful attempts to reach her mother by phone, returned two hours later to find her dead…
