Portland man sentenced after killing homeless man in Old Town stabbing

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man was sentenced to life in prison after he fatally stabbed another person in Old Town in 2024.

Jesse James Herold, 35, pleaded guilty to second degree murder for the death of Deante Dean Watts. As part of the agreement, the 14 other cases against him were dismissed.

“Mr. Watts was only 32 years old when he was murdered,” said Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Kevin Demer. “His family worried about him knowing that he was houseless and struggling while living on the streets.”

According to prosecutors, Herold stabbed Watts at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 12, 2024. The moments leading up to the crime were caught on surveillance video and show Herold stalking Watts from behind after he left the Banchet House, a homeless services organization…
